| The Ashanti king of Ghana is regarded as sacred. He is believed to represent the sun and is the source of all life and blessings within the state. In 1995, Fisher and Beckwith were invited to the King's 25th anniversary and allowed to witness the “old Stool,” which is regarded as the “soul” of the nation and hadn't been seen since the King's coronation. The gold jewelry on the King's arms was so heavy that bearers had to support then as he waved to the crowds.
