Healing and spiritual belief play a crucial role for traditional Africans. At the kokuzahn festival in Togo, which takes place every three years, Beckwith and Fisher photographed hundreds of followers in a state of possession that empowered them to perform incredible and seemingly impossible feats.

In many societies individual healers have the power to access ancestral spirits for the benefit of the community. Fisher and Beckwith spent many hours photographing a renowned female Himba exorcist in Namibia as she successfully rescued three women possessed by the spirit of a lion, which caused them to growl ferociously, foam at the mouth and fight one another.
